The World As I See It

Photography started as a prescription I wrote for myself. I needed to lose weight and I needed a reason to walk. So I picked a hobby that required it. What I did not expect was that the camera would change how I see everything.

There were years of starts and stops. Then about three years ago it got serious in a different way. I could barely walk. Significant foot problems. The doctor recommended surgery. My father had that surgery and did not survive it. My older brother had it and developed a pulmonary embolism. I told the doctor no. I was going to find another way.

I talked to Nike runners, people who understood feet and movement at a level most people never reach. I worked closely with my doctor. I addressed it the same way I approach any hard problem: gather the right expertise, build a plan, execute with patience, and do not quit when it gets hard. I never had the surgery. Today my feet are healthy and I am jogging regularly.

The camera was the reason I kept going outside. Now it is the reason I keep going outside. Photography is the practice that keeps me present, really seeing what is in front of me instead of just processing it. The Pacific Northwest gives me more material than I could photograph in a lifetime.
